Victorian Queen House Tutorial

The Terms of Use are here.

This tutorial was written for PSP 7.04, but should work in earlier versions. All you need are the selections and images in a *.zip file which you can get here.

You'll need to flood fill with patterns, and if you need a refresher, there's a short tutorial here. Just click the Back button to return to this tutorial.

Note: Now is a good time to decide the colours for your house. Here are some fill patterns, but of course you can use a solid colour or any fill you want.

Just right-click on the fills and click on Save Picture As to download them.

Let's Begin!

1. Open a new image, 446 x 492 pixels. There are a lot of layers for this tutorial, so it's probably a good idea to name them! You might want to open the *.psp files you from the *.zip file before you start, so they're ready when you need them.

2. Make a new layer, named Foundation, and open 01foundation.sel. You do this by clicking on

Selections - Load from disk,

and going to the folder where you downloaded your *.zip files.

Flood fill the selection with white, or gray, and then to go:

Effects - Texture Effects - Texture - Brick2 Texture in picture box

Use all the default settings, except % --change that to 28--and your foundation will be filled with a nice brick texture.

2a. Make a new layer, called Steps. Open the porchsteps.psp file by clicking on it, copy the steps by pressing CTRL-A and then CTRL-C. Now go back to your house image, click on it, press CTRL-E, and place on the foundation (where its empty).

3. Next layer -- Annex foundation -- 02annexfoundation.sel.  Fill same as the foundation. Do NOT deselect! Add another layer, and apply a cutout (Effects - 3D Effects - Cutout) with the following settings:

Add another layer, and apply the cutout effect again, changing the V & H to -16.

4. You can merge visible all the layers made so far. (Right click on a layer in the Layer Palette and go to Merge - Visible)

5. Main House layer -- 03mainhouse.sel Flood Fill with the pattern fill of your choice.

6. Now you can open the frontdoor.psp and frontwindow.psp files and place them on the main house. You may want to place them on separate layers, placing another copy of the door on the left side of the house as in the illustration.

NOTE:  The window files are in two layers, so if you don't like the screening, you can put curtains or a gradient on the lower layer. Before using them, you have to right click on one of the layers and Merge - Visible.

NOTE:   You copy the *.psp images to your image the same way as you copied the stairs.
7. Porch Roof Layer -- 04porchroof.sel. Flood fill with the colour you want. (I used #402B2A.) Now apply the blinds effect,

Effects - Texture Effects - Blinds,

checking Horizontal, with the following settings:

You can add a drop shadow, if you wish, by going to Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow and using the following settings:

8. Main Roof Layer -- 05mainroof.sel. Fill as in Step 7, and add the same Drop Shadow. Right now your house looks very strange, but it will improve!

9. Tower Layer -- 06tower.sel. Fill with your pattern.

10. Tower Side Layer -- 07towerside.sel. Using the fill you want, use Scale - 100%, Angle - 47, and fill the selection.

11. Now would be a good time to open the roundedupperwins.psp file and to place it on the Tower.

12. Front Annex layer -- 08frontannex.sel. Fill the selection with your pattern.

13. Bay Section layer -- 09baysection.sel. Flood fill this selection with the colour of the pattern fill you want to use for the bay.

Dusty Pink--#CD9AA3 // Blue--#7898A7 // Mustard--#EFCE63
Purple--#947394 // Green--#67ADA3).

Don't do anything else. This layer acts as a template for the following selections, and can be deleted later.

14. Left bay layer -- 09bleftbay.sel. Flood fill with Pattern set at 100% and Angle - 349. Deselect! (CTRL-D)

15. Duplicate the left bay layer. (Click on Layers - Duplicate). Now go to

Image - Mirror

Use the mover tool to put this right-hand piece in place over the bay template. Don't worry about the top, it will be covered by the roof--just align the right side and bottom as well as you can.

16. Centre Bay layer -- 09ccentrebay.sel. Flood fill with your pattern. You can now delete the Bay Section Layer.

17. Make another layer, Bay Window, and load 13baywindowintreior.sel. Fill it with a colour or pattern you want seen through the window. Make another layer and place the Bay Window from the *.zip file in place. (Remember to Merge layers first!)

18. Bay Roof layer - 10bayroof.sel. Fill and use the blind effect as usual.

19. Bay Window Trim 1 layer - 11baywindowtrim1.sel. Flood fill with white or any contrasting colour.

20. Bay Window Trim 2 layer -- 12baywindowtrim2.sel. Fill with white or a contrasting colour, and Add a drop shadow, V & H 1, Opacity 71, Blur 1, Colour Black.

21. Bay Window Trim 3 layer -- 12cbaywindowtrim3.sel. Flood fill with white.

22. Front Annex Roof -- 14afrontannexroof.sel. Fill with your colour and add the Blinds Effect we've been using. Then get the selection 14frontannexstripe.sel and fill with the same colour as your roof.

23. Open the trimannexroof.psp file. Place the trim on the annex roof, and add the Drop Shadow with the same settings.

24. Tower Roof layer - 15towerroof.sel. Fill and add Blind Effect as usual.

24a. Open the ironrailing.psp file and place the railing over the Tower Roof.

25. Chimney layer -- 16chimney.sel. Fill with white and add the brick texture, or use the Colour Pallette for a more realistic brick effect.

26. Porch Floor layer -- 17porchfloor.sel. Fill with gray or any colour you like.

27. Porch Railing layer - 18porchrailings.sel. Flood fill with white (or any colour), and add an inner bevel:

Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel
Soft Edge Preset

Congratulations! You're all done, and can add a background, flowers, all sorts of things! I hope you enjoy your house.
