Bed Warmer

This tutorial was written with PSP 7. All you will need is bedwarmer.zip. The bow used with the decorative warmer is from a dingbat font by Dizzinz.

The terms of use are here

NOTE: Each step which needs a new layer will use the format with the name of the new layer, and then the selection for that layer. So Whatever layer - whatever.sel, means make a new layer Whatever, and then get the whatever.sel file by going to Selections - Load from disk.

If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here

1. Open a new image, 160 x 530 pixels. Get 01strap.sel. Flood-fill with #1E1CIC to simulate leather, or any colour you like. (I used #7898A7 for the decorative warmer.)

2. Handle layer - 02handle.sel. Flood-fill with the wood pattern from the *.zip file (or white for the decorative warmer), and go to Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel and use the Round preset, changing the Ambience to minus 42.

3. Metal Joiner layer - get 03metaljoiner.sel. Flood-fill with #806858. Deselect (CTRL-D). Make another layer, Highlights. Change your foreground colour to white. Use the Draw Tool with these settings:

Single Line, Width 2, Line Style - Solid, only Antialias checked,

and draw a line down the centre of the Metal Joiner. Don't worry about going outside the Joiner. Then go to Effects - Blur - Gaussian Blur 1.5. Get 03metaljoiner.sel again. Go to Selections - Invert, and hit Delete and that will take care of any stray line.

4. Metal Flipper layer - 04metalflipper.sel. (LOL, I made this name up because this piece flips up the cover of the pan.) Flood-fill with #AC9162 or white. (If you prefer a new, shinier, warmer, you could flood-fill with white and use a Blade Pro preset or Eye Candy for the Flipper and the Pan.) Keep selected!

Make a new layer, Stippling. Change the Foreground Colour to black. Use the Airbrush Tool , just spraying once, with the following settings:

Then go to Blur - Gaussian Blur - 4.

I didn't stipple the decorative warmer, but you may want to, but with a colour like dark blue.

5. Pan layer - 05outerrim.sel. Flood-fill with the same colour (#AC9162). Go to Selections - Modify - Contract 3 pixels. Then go to Selections - Invert and use the Magic Wand to select the outer rim. (If you use the Zoom tool to make the image larger, it's easier to see the rim.)

Then go to Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel and use the following settings:

If you are making the decorative warmer, just flood-fill the rim with a colour you like--the Inner Bevel looks pretty bad with the solid colour.

6. Inner Rim layer. Go to Layers - Duplicate.

Name the duplicated layer Inner Rim, and then go to Image - Resize - 95%. Be sure that All layers is not checked! Duplicate this Inner Rim by going to Layers - Duplicate.

7. Smallest Rim. Name this duplicated layer Smallest Rim, and go to Image - Resize - 85%.

8. Decoration layer - optional. Many bed warmers have some kind of decoration. You could use a ding from a font you like, or a brush, or initial.

If you use a ding or initial, use the Text Tool , click on Antialias and Selection, instead of Floating. You will have the outline of the letter or ding. Then go to Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow and use these settings:

V & H 1, Opacity 60, Blur 3, Colour Black.

(If you use a brush, just hit delete and you will have the outline of the brush and can then apply the Drop Shadow.)

9. Stippling 2. Make your Foreground black and then make another layer, Stippling 2, get 05outerrim.sel, and using the same Airbrush settings as before, spray the selected part and add a Gaussian Blur of 4.

10. Cutout layer - 06cutout.sel. Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Cutout and apply the following settings:

V & H 1, Opacity 43, Blur 25.

11. Holes layer. Check that your foreground colour is black. Then use the Airbrush with the following settings to make the holes:

Round, Size 3, Hardness 100, Opacity 100, Step 25, Density 100.

I started by putting the holes at 12, 3, 6, 9 o'clock, and then put holes in between.

You're all done! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
