Canada Goose Tutorial

This goose was made with PSP 8, but can be done in earlier versions.

You will need the selection files, and the free version of Eye Candy.

How to Get The Alpha Selections
Selections - Load/Save Selections - Load Selection from Alpha Channel
Click on the selection you want and then on Load




1. Download the colour chart above by right-clicking on it. Open the cangoosealpha.psp file you downloaded, click on the Pattern layer and get the Pattern selection. Flood-fill with Colour #1.

2. Webbing - Flood-fill with #808080.

3. Legs - Flood-fill with Colour #10.

4. Back Feathers Dark - Flood-fill with Colour #3.

5. Back Feathers Gray - Flood-fill with Colour #4.

6. Black Feather Stripes - Flood-fill with Colour #1. Lower the opacity of the layer to around 78, by using the slider in the Layer Pallette.

7. Back Wing - Flood-fill with Colour #9 and go to

Selections - Invert
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V & H 5, Opacity 49, Blur 10, Colour #1.


8. Bottom Darker - Flood-fill with Colour #8. Keep selected! Set the Foreground colour to #7 and then click on the Air Brush Tool and use these settings:

Shape Round, Size 200, Hardness 50, Step 25, Density 25, Thickness 100, Rotation 0, Opacity 45, Blend Mode Normal

Set your brush over the bottom piece and click once. Go to:

Adjust - Blur - Motion Blur
Angle 75, 13 pixels.


9. Bottom White - Flood-fill with Colour #5.

Deselect (CTRL-D)
Click on the Soften Tool



Move the cursor back and forth on the left side to soften the edges.




10. Middle Back Feather - Flood-fill with Colour #9.

11. Chest - Flood-fill with Colour #5. Go to:

Adjust - Add/Remove Noise - Add Noise - 25% Uniform.


12. Beak - Flood-fill with Colour #10.

13. Beak Marks - Flood-fill with Black.

14. Head and Neck - Flood-fill with Colour #7. Go to:

Effects - Plugins - Eye Candy - Fur - Hedgehog preset
Wave Spacing 5, Waviness 11, Hair Length 10, Shininess 70, Smooth checked
Use the Soften Tool again, where the neck meets the chest.


15. Chin Strap - Flood-fill with Colour #5.

16. Eye - Flood-fill with #C0C0C0. Go to

Selections - Modify - Contract 1 pixel
Flood-fill with Colour #6
Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Round preset.


17. Middle Side - Flood-fill with Colour # 9, invert the selection, and apply the following Drop Shadow

V & H 10, Opacity 49, Blur 21, Colour #1
Repeat the Drop Shadow, changing the V & H to minus 10.

Use the Soften Tool with the same settings, to soften the edges.


18. Middle Stripes layer - We'll come back to this layer, later.

19. Top Wing - Flood-fill with Colour #9, and go to

Selections - Invert
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V & H 10, Opacity 49, Blur 21, Colour #1
Repeat the Drop Shadow, changing the V & H to minus 10.


20. Shadow Stripes - Get the Shadow Stripes selection and use the following Drop Shadow:

V & H 2, Opacity 20, Blur 3, Colour Black


21. Light Markings - Flood-fill with Colour #8, and then lower the opacity of the layer to about 72.

22. Now it's time to add some stripey bits on the Bottom White layer and the Middle Side layer. First, click on the Air Brush Tool and use these settings:

Shape Round, Size 12, Hardness 25, Step 25, Density 27, Thickness 100, Rotation 0, Opacity 18, Blend Mode - Normal.


23. Let's start with the Middle Side layer. Click on the Middle Side layer and get the Middle Side selection. Make the Foreground colour #8. Then, using the Air Brush Too, draw some stripes, something like this (LOL--of course not in red):



24. Bottom White layer - click on this layer, get the Bottom White selection, change the Foreground colour to #9, and change the Airbrush Opacity setting to 10. Lightly make some stripes like the ones above, and you're done.
