Chalet Tutorial

This tutorial is very easy and can be done in PSP 8, or any earlier versions which use Alpha Channels.

All you will need is the chalet file and the Spatch pattern, if you're using PSP 8. You can right-click on the Spatch pattern below to download it and leave it open on the desktop.

The terms of use are here

If you aren't familiar with using the PSP 7 Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here

There is a short tutorial for the Materials Pallette in PSP 8 here.

NOTE:  If you are using PSP 8, and would like to place the Spatch pattern in your Pattern file, so it shows up in the Materials Pallette, save it as a *.pspimage file. You can do this simply by pressing F12 and saving as Spatch.pspimage in the Patterns file which is usually under Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 8\Patterns.

Let's Begin!

1. First, open the chaletalpha.psp file you downloaded.

For each step, you click on the layer and to get the selection file, you go to:

Selections - Load/Save Selection - Load Selection from Alpha Channel
Click on the selection you want and click on Load.

The name of the layer and the selection are the same, so for instance, in Step 2, you would click on the Inside Windows layer, and then get the Inside Windows selection.

2. Inside Windows - If you would prefer having curtains, or something else showing through the windows, you might want to come back to this layer after you've finished the chalet. However if you like the look of the blinds, here are the directions:

Flood-fill the Inside Windows selection with white and then go to:

Effects - Texture Effects - Blinds
Width 5, Opacity 15, Horizontal unchecked, Colour Black

3. Chimney Cap - Flood-fill with #404040.

4. Chimney Front - Flood-fill with the Brick 01 pattern, with the scale set at 20%.

5. Chimney Side - Get the second Chimney Front alpha selection and Flood-fill the same way.

6. Under Roof - Flood-fill with Black.

7. Side - Flood-fill with White or the Spatch pattern with the Scale at 60.

8. Front - Flood-fill with White or the Spatch pattern.

9. House Shadow - Flood-fill with #9E9E9B. Then lower the opacity of the layer by using the slider in the Layer Pallette to 70%.

10. Beams - Flood-fill with #360000.

11. Beams 1 - Flood-fill with #5F290D.

12. Roof Edge - Flood-fill with Black.

13. Inside Door - Flood-fill with gray, or a metallic gradient.

14. Entry - Flood-fill with #592C1A.

15. Door - Flood-fill with #A1502F, or any colour you would like.

16. Stoop - Flood-fill with #808080.

17. Window Bits - Flood-fill with #5F290D.

18. Side Door - Flood-fill with the same colour you just used.

19. Windows Layer - Windows selection - Flood-fill with #5F290D. Click on the Magic Wand Tool . Then, holding down the SHIFT key, click inside each window, except the really thin ones on the side. Then go to:

Selections - Invert
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
Vertical 10, Horizontal 10, Opacity 36, Blur 5, Colour #404040

20. Shutters - Flood-fill with #3A1604.

21. Flowers layer - we'll come back to this later. It's pretty hard to know where to put the flowers before the balconies are up!

22. Balconies - Flood-fill with #E8DCDC. Then go to:

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
Vertical 5, Horizontal 0, Opacity 50, Blur 5, Colour #404040.

23. Dowels - Flood-fill with #714715.

24. Balcony Floor - Flood-fill with #A0865E.

25. Balcony Rails - Flood-fill with #4B1F08.

26. Well, I got this far and looked at the door, and realised something was missing!

Door Knobs - Flood-fill with white, and then go to:

Effects - Texture Effects - Sculpture
Use the Gold preset or any other preset you like.

27. Now click on the Flowers layer. You can cut and past the geraniums you downloaded, or any other flower image you have:

Open the image by clicking on it
Copy the image by pressing CTRL-C
Open your Chalet image by clicking on it
Copy the flowers by pressing CTRL-E for each set of flowers you want.

Congratulations! Wasn't that easy? I hope you enjoyed making your chalet.
