Church Tutorial

The terms of use are here

This tutorial was written with PSP 7, but should be easy to do with earlier versions. You'll need to be familiar with layers and using the Flood Fill tool for patterns.

You will need church.zip which has the selections and church1.zip, which has the windows and door files.

Depending on which church you make, you will need one or more of these fill patterns, which you download by right-clicking and saving:

Open a new image, 350 x 480 pixels.

1. Make a new layer, Right Side, and go to Selections - Load from Disk, and click on 01rightside.sel. Flood fill the selection with the stone pattern or a solid colour.

2. Make a new layer, Right Roof, and get the selection 02rightroof.sel, and fill it with a colour you like. (I used #B22626.) Keep selected, go to Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow, and add a drop shadow with these values:

Vertical 5, Horizontal 0, Opacity 100, Blur 12

3. Make another new layer - Right front window, which we'll go back to later.

4. Front tower layer - 03fronttower.sel. Flood fill, but make the angle 9 if using the stone fill. (If you're using a solid colour, you don't have to worry about the angle.)

NOTE: If you're using a solid colour, you may want to add a drop shadow to give your tower and other selections definition. You can use a darker version of the colour you're using, or dark gray. You might want to try V 0, H 1, with an opacity around 60 and a blur around 6-12.

5. Left tower layer - 04lefttower.sel. Flood fill, but this time make the angle 345.

6. Left side - 05leftside.sel. Flood fill with an angle of 355.

7. Front side - 06frontside.sel. Flood fill with an angle of 0. Apply a drop shadow V 1, H 1, Opacity 56, Blur 12.

Now, apply another drop shadow, changing the V & H to minus(-1), and the Color to white.

8. Left Roof layer - 07leftroof.sel. Flood fill with whatever colour you're using, and add a drop shadow V 7, H 7, Opacity 66, Blur 12.

9. Front Steeple layer - 08frontsteeple.sel. Flood fill with either the brown or white pattern, at an angle of 9.

10. Left steeple layer - 09leftsteeple.sel. Flood fill with an angle of 336.

11. Tower roof layer - 10towerroof.sel. Flood fill with your roof colour.

12. Make a new layer, Front Door, which we'll return to later.

13. Right stair side - 11rightstairside.sel. Flood fill with light gray, or any colour that appeals to you.

14. Steps layer - 12steps.sel. Flood fill with dark gray or brown, or any colour you like. (I used #908273.)

15. Left stair side - 13leftstairside.sel. Flood fill with the same colour you used for the right stair side.

16. Wood parts - 14woodparts.sel. Flood fill with #908273. Add a drop shadow, V 0, H 1, Opacity 66, Blur 6.

17. Side Windows layer. (We'll return to this later.)

18. Side roof bit layer - 15sideroofbit.sel. Flood fill with your roof colour.

18. Side Roof - 16sideroof.sel. Floor fill with your colour.

19. Left steeple roof layer - 17leftsteepleroof.sel. Flood fill this selection with a colour which is slightly lighter than your roof color to give it a hint of an angle. (I used #C00000.)

20. Right steeple roof layer - 18rightsteepleroof.sel. Flood fill with your regular roof colour.

Whew--you've finished the basic structure!

Now for the Fun!
If you haven't done so yet, open the following files on your work space:

sidewindows.psp
door.psp
towerwindow.psp
frontwindow.psp
cross.psp
basementwindows.psp

Open the door.psp image by clicking on it, press CTRL-A, CTRL-C, and then to to your church image, clicking on the Door layer in the layer pallette, press CTRL-E, and put the door in place.

For the sidewindows, do the same, placing them on the Side Windows layer.

Place the frontwindow.psp on the Right Front Window layer.

Place the rest of the layers at the top, over the Right Steeple Roof layer and place the cross, tower window, and the frontwindow.psp on the left front. You may want to go back to some of the window layers to move them with the Mover tool . Do this for each object, and you're done!

Congratulations, and I hope you enjoyed making your church!
