Courthouse Tutorial

LOL--I've called this a courthouse, but I think it could be any generic building, like a library or a high school (without the dome). It is quite easy, and all you'll need is the courthouse file.

How to Get The Alpha Selections
Selections - Load/Save Selections - Load Selection from Alpha Channel
Click on the selection you want and then on Load


1. Open the courthousealpha.psp file you downloaded, and click on the Facade layer. Get the Facade selection and flood-fill with white.

2. Window Bits - Flood-fill with white. Go to

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop shadow
V 1, H 0, Opacity 50, Blur 3, Colour black


3. Windows - Flood-fill with white. With the Magic Wand , click on any blank place outside the windows. Then go to

Selections - Invert
V 1, H 1, Opacity 20, Blur 1, Colour Black
Repeat the Drop Shadow, changing the V & H to minus 1.


Now, take the Magic Wand again, and, holding the SHIFT key down, click inside each window. Go to Selections - Modify - Expand 1 pixel. Then click on the Inside layer at the bottom and flood-fill with a gray colour, or gradient. If you wish, you can flood-fill with a colour and then apply a Blinds Effect (Effects - Texture Effects - Blinds) to simulate curtains or blinds. Keep selected!

Click on the Windows layer
Selections - Modify - Contract 1 pixel
Selections - Invert
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V & H 5, Opacity 50, Blur 5, Colour Black


4. Door - Flood-fill with a dark wood pattern, like the Finished Wood pattern. Then click inside the opening of the door with your Magic Wand,

Selections - Modify - Expand 1 pixel
Keep selected and click on the Inside layer
Flood-fill with a metallic gradient or gray, or whatever you like.


5. Door Panels - Flood-fill the panels with the same wood pattern, and go to:

Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel
Use the Angled preset, changing the Width to 1.


5. Now click on the Door layer again, and then, with the Magic Wand, click anywhere outside the door. Then, click on the Door Panels layer, and apply this Drop Shadow

V & H 10, Opacity 50, Blur 5, Colour black.


6. Platform layer - Flood-fill with #ECECEC.

7. Stripes layer - Flood-fill with white and apply the following Drop Shadow:

V 3, H 0, Opacity 30, Blur 3, Colour black.


8. Diamonds layer - After you get the selection,

Selections - Invert
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop shadow
V & H 3, Opacity 50, Blur 3, Colour black.


9. Columns - Flood-fill with white.

Effects - Texture Effects - Blinds
Width 3, Opacity 25, Colour black, Horizontal notchecked.

Drop Shadow - V 0, H 5, Opacity 50, Blur 3, colour black.


10. Column Supports - Flood-fill with white.

11. Ledges - Flood-fill with white.

Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Metallic preset, Width 1.


12. Dome Cap - Flood-fill with white

Selections - Invert
Drop Shadow - V & H 2, Opacity 30, Blur 5, Colour black
Repeat the Drop Shadow, changing the V & H to minus 2.


13. Dome Cap - Flood-fill with white, invert the selection, and apply the same drop shadows we just did.

14. Dome Front - Flood-fill with white. Deselect (CTRL-D). Using the Magic Wand, and holding down the SHIFT key, click inside each of the dome openings.

Selections - Invert
Drop Shadow - V & H 3, Opacity 50, Blur 3, Colour black


15. Lower Balcony Columns - Flood-fill with white and apply this drop shadow:

V 0, H 3, Opacity 70, Blur 2, Colour black.


16. Lower Balcony Rails - Flood-fill with white and apply the Inner Bevel Metallic preset.

17. Upper Balcony Columns - Flood-fill with white and apply this Drop Shadow:

V 0, H 3, Opacity 70, Blur 2, Colour black.


18. Upper Balcony Rails - Inner Bevel, Metallic preset.

19. Triangle - Flood-fill with white.

20. Inner Triangle - Selections - Invert and apply the following Drop Shadow:

V & H 3, Opacity 50, Blur 2, colour black.


21. Stars - Selections - Invert and add this drop shadow:

V & H 3, Opacity 50, Blur 3, colour black.


22. Risers - Flood-fill with #ECECEC.

23. Steps - Flood-fill with black. Lower the opacity of the layer by moving the slider in the Layer Pallette, to around 40.

24. Handles - Flood-fill with white

Effects - Texture Effects - Sculpture - Copper preset.
