Double Gourd Vase Tutorial

PSP 7 and PSP 8

These are called double vases because they come apart to make two vases like this:

The terms of use are here

This tutorial was written with PSP 7, and additional directions are given for PSP 8, where there is a difference, in red. You should be familiar with the Colour Pallette (Materials Pallette), the Layer Pallette, and the Text Tool if you're using the gold design.

There is a tutorial for using the PSP 8 Materials(Colour) Pallete here. Just hit the Back arrow to return here.

You will need

gourdvase.zip, which contains the Alpha Selections,
OR gourdvase1.zip, which contains selections
gourdvase2.zip, which contains the tulip. The tulip was made from a tutorial by Whisper.
A gold gradient. If you don't have one, you can download one here

Optional - any tube you like.
Design 5 font

Note: Some people have found that they cannot get the *.zip file to download unless they turn off their ad-filters.

We will be making the blue vase. If you want to make a floral vase, pick a tube/image you like, and make the base and lines a colour that goes with the tube.

1. Open the doublevasealpha.psp file, or start a new image, 250 x 450 pixels. Click on the Base layer and

Go to Selections - Load from Alpha Channel - 01base
Selection - Load/Save Selection - Load Selection from Alpha Channel - 01base

Flood-fill with a gold gradient, or use a filtre like Blade Pro.

2. Bottom Gourd layer

Get 02bottomgourd
Flood-fill with #000040

3. Lower Lines layer

Get 03lowerlines
Flood-fill with your gold gradient

4. Lower Inside layer

Get 04lowerinside
Flood-fill with your gold gradient

5. Lower Rim

Get 05lowerrim
Flood-fill with your gold gradient
Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Round preset
Change the Width to 1.

Now, if you like, you can merge the layers for your lower vase by going to

Layers - Merge - Merge Visible
or by right-clicking on a layer in the Layer Pallette and Merging Visible

6. Upper Gourd layer

Get 06uppergourd
Flood-fill with #000040

7. Upper Lines layer

Get 07uppergourd
Flood-fill with the gold gradient

These lines are quite thin. If your gold gradient seems dark, you can lighten them by going to

Colors - Adjust - Brightness/Contrast
Adjust - Brightness and Contrast - Brightness/Contrast
Set the Brightness to 20 or 30 to start, and adjust if necessary.

8. Inner Top layer

Get 08innertop
Flood-fill with black or the gold gradient.

9. Upper Rim layer

Get 09upperrim
Flood-fill with the gold gradient
Apply the same Inner Bevel as before.

Turn off your lower gourd layer(s) and merge the upper layers for the upper vase.

10. Make a new layer - Lower Flowers or Design layer. If you're making the design, with the Text Tool use the capital E from the Design5 font, Size 72, filling with the gold gradient, then go to Step 11.

Open the blue tulip image you downloaded. Resize by going to

Image - Resize - 75%
Effects - Sharpen - Sharpen
Adjust - Sharpness - Sharpen

11. Copy the tulip (CTRL-C). (For the Design, use the Text Tool 2 more times.) Then go back to your vase image and paste (CTRL-E)in the centre panel of the lower gourd. Press CTRL-E again and place this tulip on one of the side panels, so about half of the tulip is not on the image. Press CTRL-E once more and place this tulip on the other side. It will look like this:

Get the 02bottomgourd selection and go to

Selection - Invert and then
hit CTRL-X to get rid of the excess of the flowers.

11. For the Design, use the same settings, but change the font size to 36, and follow the same procedures as for the lower gourd, but using the 06uppergourd selection.

For the tulips -- Go back to the tulip image, resize 75% again and sharpen and follow the same directions as for the lower gourd (with the 06uppergourd selection).

Congratulations - You're all done. I hope you enjoyed making your vase.
