Grandfather Clock Tutorial

The terms of use are here

For this tutorial, all you will need is PSP 7 and the selection file,
with *.psp images, which you will find here.

You will need to be familiar with layers and the Flood-Fill tool .

This Grandfather clock is an image of the Grandfather clock my husband made. We always wanted one, but they are sooo dear, so he made this, and I treasure it.

1. Begin by opening a new file, 200 x 600 pixels.

Name this first layer Background, and make another layer, Back Panel. Go to Selections - Load from Disk, and choose 01backpanel.sel. Flood-fill with the wood tile given, at 90°, or with any wood pattern of your choice.

2. Make another layer, Front Panel, and choose 02frontpanel.sel. Flood fill with your wood pattern.

3. Make a new layer, Kickplate, and choose 03kickplate.sel. Flood fill with your wood image.

Note: If you're using the same fill as I did, you can make your own ridges, or you can open the frontridges.psp file, press CTRL-A, then CTRL-C, to copy it, and skip down to Step 5.
4. Open a new file, 132 x 10 pixels. Now double-click on the selection tool . Select Area box will pop up. Use the following values:

and then click on OK.

Flood-fill the selection on your image with the wood pattern and then go to:

Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel

and apply the following settings:

Now, double-click on the selection tool again, and this time change the Top to 0 and the bottom to 5. Flood fill with the wood pattern again, and apply the same inner bevel. Save the file as frontridges.psp, but don't close it.

Now press CTRL-A and then CTRL-C to copy this image.

5. Go to your grandfatherclock image and open it by clicking on it, and make a new layer, Front Ridges, and then press CTRL-E and move your ridges into place, between the back panel and the front panel.

6. Make another layer, Bottom Ridges, press CTRL-E again, and place these ridges between the front panel and the kickplate.

7. Make another layer, Clock Face, yet another layer, Upper Glass (We'll go back to these layers later) and make another layer, Upper Door frame, and choose 04upperdoor.sel. Flood-fill with the wood pattern, and apply the PSP preset Soft Edge.

8. Open the file you downloaded, clockfaceback.psp, press CTRL-A, and then CTRL-C. Open your Grandfather Clock image by clicking on it, go to the Clock Face layer, press CTRL-E, and move the clock face into place.

9. Go back to the Upper Door frame layer and, using the Magic Wand, click inside the upper door frame and to to:

Selections - Modify - Expand - 2 pixels

Keep selected, and go to the layer pallette and click on the Upper Glass layer. Flood fill the selection with a light gray colour (I used #COCOCO), [remember to change the styles box from pattern to solid colour--the paintbrush] and then lower the transparency by about 30% by clicking on the slider in the layer pallette:

10. Make another layer, (above Upper door frame), Top Piece, and choose 05toppiece.sel. Flood-fill with the wood pattern. Go to:

Selections - Modify - Contract - 4 pixels, and then to
Selections - Invert,

and, using the Magic Wand, click on the outside wood area as in the image below:

11. Keep this area selected, make another layer, Top Piece bevel, fill the selection with your wood pattern, and apply the Inner Bevel PSP preset Shiny.

12. Make another layer, Topmost ridge, get the 06topmostridge selection, flood fill with your wood pattern, and apply the inner bevel:

Then go to

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V-3, H-0, Opacity 100, Blur-10.

13.Make seven new layers--Left Post, Right Post, Middle Ridges, Top middle ridge, Chimes, Lower Glass, (We'll return to these later)--and then another layer, Lower Door Frame.

Get the 07lowerdoorframe.sel, flood fill and apply the preset shiny.

Middle Ridges

Note: If you're using the same fill as I did, you can make your own ridges, or you can open the middleridges.psp file, (press CTRL-A, CTRL-C to copy it) and skip down to Step 15.

14. Now make a new image, 158 x 24 pixels. Double click on the Selection Tool, and use the following settings:

Left - 0 Right - 158
Top - 18 Bottom - 24

Flood-fill with the wood pattern, and apply the Inner Bevel with these settings:

Double-click on the Selection Tool again, and this time change the Top and Bottom settings to:

Top - 12 Bottom - 18

Flood-fill the selection with the wood pattern, and apply the same Inner Bevel.

Double-click the Selection Tool again and change the Bottom and Top settings to Top - 6 Bottom - 12, and again flood fill and apply the Inner Bevel. Now, one more time, double-click on the Selection Tool and change to Top - 0 Bottom - 6, flood fill and apply the Inner Bevel. Save the image as middleridges.psp.

15. Press CTRL-A, CTRL-C, and then go to your Grandfather Clock image, on the Middle Ridges layer, press CTRL-E, and move the ridges into place, between the upper and lower door frames.

Click on the Deformation Tool , and bring the lower corners together by placing your cursor over one of the corners, pressing the CTRL key, and sliding the corners in towards the grandfather clock while holding down your mouse button:

deformation    deformation finished

Double-click on the image when you're through, to get rid of the deformation rectangle. (You may want to re-position the middle ridges with the Mover tool .

16. Go to the Top Middle Ridge layer, and select 08topmiddleridge.sel. Flood fill and apply the same bevel. (Don't know why this layer is necessary, but the clock looks much better with it.) Then apply a drop shadow--V-3, H-0, Opacity-100, Blur-10.

17. Click on the Left Post layer you made earlier, and then open the image grandfpost.psp. Press CTRL-A and then CTRL-C to copy the image, and then open your Grandfather Clock image by clicking on it, press CTRL-E and carefully place the post in place.

Now, go the the layer, Right Post, and press CTRL-E again, and place the right post in place.

18. Open the chimes.psp file you downloaded, press CTRL-A, CTRL-C, go to the Chimes layer in your Grandfather Clock image, press CTRL-E, and move the chimes in place.

19. Go to the Lower Door frame and use the Magic Wand to click inside the Frame. Go to Selections - Modify - Expand - 2 pixels, and then go to the Lower Glass layer, flood fill with the same gray colour you used before, and lower the transparency to about 30%.

20. Almost done! Make another layer, Hardware, open the latch.psp file, and move it to your image. Then do the same with the hinges.psp file. Voilà!

You're all finished! Congratulations! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
