Antique Iron Tutorial
This tutorial was written with PSP 7. You will need the
iron.zip file and Fantastic Machine's
Paint Engine, which is a free plugin.
The terms of use are
here
NOTE: Each step which needs a new layer will use the format with the name of the new layer, and then the selection for that layer. So Whatever layer - whatever.sel, means make a new layer Whatever, and then get the whatever.sel file by going to Selections - Load from disk.
If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here
1. Open a new image, 246 x 219 pixels. This is the
Top layer. Just get 01top.sel and Flood-fill with #2A2B26.
2. Top 1 layer - 02toplayer1.sel. Flood-fill with #2A2B26 and go to
Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Frame Preset
Change Width to 1 and Shininess to 56.
3. Top 2 layer - 03top2.sel. Flood-fill and apply the same Inner Bevel.
4. Top 3 layer - 04top3.sel. Flood-fill and apply the Inner Bevel again.
5. Top 4 layer - 05top4.sel. Flood-fill.
6. Tab layer - 06tab.sel. Flood-fill.
7. Base Ring layer - 07basering.sel. Flood-fill and then go to
Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Round preset.
8. Base Dome layer - 08basedome.sel. Flood-fill, and apply the Round preset again.
9. Handle layer - 09handle.sel. Flood-fill, and apply the Round preset again.
10. Ring layer - 10ring.sel. Flood-fill and apply the same Inner Bevel.
On the same layer, get 11innerring.sel, flood-fill and apply the bevel.
Now, with the Eraser Tool

,
Shape Square, Size 8, Hardness 100
Opacity 100, Step 25, Density 100,
Unless you're eagle-eyed, click on the Zoom Tool

to enlarge the image. Carefully erase the front part of the ring as shown below (of course your rings won't be white!):
11. Soapstone layer - 12soapstone.sel. Flood-fill with #757053.
Go to Layers - Duplicate, name this layer Soapstone 1, and then go to
Effects - Plug-in Filters - Fantastic Machines - Paint Engine
Use the Emboss Stamping preset.
Then, change the layer setting from Normal to Soft light by clicking on the right-hand column in the Layer Pallette, and then click on Soft Light in the menu that pops up:
12. Wood Handle layer - 14woodhandle.sel. Open the handle.psp you downloaded, by clicking on the image. Then copy it (CTRL-C)and go to your Iron image and paste into the 12woodhandle.sel (SHIFT-CTRL-C).
13. Top Base layer - 14topbase.sel. Flood-fill and apply the Inner Bevel Round preset. Change the Smoothness to 100.
14. Support layer - 15support.sel. Flood-fill and apply the Inner Bevel Frame preset.
Congratulations, you made an iron--and aren't you glad that we don't have to use those any more!
