Kitchen Utensils PSP Tutorial

This tutorial was done with PSP 7, but can be done in later versions. It is quite easy.

All that you will need is the utensils file and a nice metallic gradient.

The terms of use are here

If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here

There is a short tutorial for the Materials Pallette in PSP 8 here.

How to Get The Alpha Selections

Selections - Load/Save Selections - Load Selection from Alpha Channel
Click on the selection you want and then on Load

1. Bar layer - Flood-fill with the metallic gradient, Linear, Angle 180, Repeats 0, Invert Gradient NOT checked.

2. Handles - Flood-fill with white. Then use the Selection Tool , set to Rectangle, and draw around one of the handles. Then click on the handle with the Magic Wand , and it will be selected.

Once the one handle is selected, flood-fill with the metallic gradient, Linear, Angle 90, Repeats 0.

Repeat this procedure with each handle.

3. Spatula - Flood-fill with the metallic gradient, Linear, Angle 135, Repeats 0.

4. Pegs - Flood-fill with #F0F0F0.

Deselect - (CTRL D)
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V & H 2, Opacity 90, Blur 2, Colour black.

5. Fork - Flood-fill with the metallic gradient, Linear, Angle 135, Repeats 0, Invert Gradient checked. Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel with the following settings:

6. Slotted Spoon - Flood-fill with the metallic gradient, Linear, Angle 135, Repeats 0, Invert Gradient checked.

Deselect (CTRL-D)
Click on an empty space outside the spoon with your Magic Wand.
Selections - Invert
Selections - Modify - Contract - 6 pixels
Selections - Invert
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V & H 5, Opacity 30, Blur 16, Colour black.

Deselect (CTRL-D)

7. Click on the Slotted Spoon Rim layer and select the Slotted Spoon alpha selection, and Flood-fill with the same gradient you used last.

Deselect (CTRL-D)

Click on the Paint Brush Tool , with the following settings:

Size 10, Round, Hardness, Opacity, Density all 100, Step 25.

It doesn't matter what it looks like, so don't bother changing the Foreground colour. Carefully paint over just the slots in the spoon.

Now we can select the spoon, getting a nice clean edge. If we used the same technique as in Step 6, the edges wouldn't be smooth.

Selections - Select All (CTRL-A)
Selections - Float (CTRL-F)
Selections - Defloat (SHIFT-CTRL-F)
Flood-fill with the gradient you used last
Selections - Modify - Contract 6 pixels
CTRL-X and the rim is made.

7. With the Magic Wand, click on an empty area outside the Rim you made, and then go to Selections - Invert.

8. Click on the Retouch Tool (PSP 7) or the Soften Tool (PSP 8&9) .

Sweep around the inside of the rim to soften it until you like the way it looks.

8. Spoon - Flood-fill with the metallic gradient, Linear, Angle 135, Repeats 0, Invert Gradient checked.

Selections - Modify - Contract - 6 pixels
Selections - Invert
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V & H 5, Opacity 30, Blur 16, Colour black.

9. Spoon Rim - Click on this layer and get the Spoon selection again. Flood-fill it with the gradient you just used.

Selections - Modify - Contract 6 pixels
CTRL-X

Get the Spoon selection again, and soften the ring, as in Step 8.

We added this ring, because if you used the Soften Tool on the first Spoon layer, it would have made a mess because of the Drop Shadow.

10. Ladle - Flood-fill with the metallic gradient, Linear, Angle 135, Repeats 0, Invert Gradient checked.

11. Ladle Rim - Flood-fill with the same gradient, and you're done.

I hope you like your utensils.
