Koala Tutorial
Who doesn't like Koalas?
This image was made with PSP 8, but can be done in earlier versions.
You will need the
koala file, the free version of
Eye Candy, Fantastic Machine's
Paint Engine, a leaf tube, and a nice wood texture. There are lots of them
here.
Koalas come in all sorts of colours, so feel free to use any colours you like. We will not be using the all the colours, but all the colours are koala colours. :-)
The terms of use are
here
If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation
here
There is a short tutorial for the Materials Pallette in PSP 8
here.
How to Get The Alpha Selections
Selections - Load/Save Selections - Load Selection from Alpha Channel
Click on the selection you want and then on Load
1. Right-click on the colour palette above, and keep it open on your work space. Then open the koala file you downloaded, and click on the Background layer. Flood-fill it with a colour like #3B76FD. This layer is just there so you can see the white selections, and you can delete it at the end.
2. Tree layer - Flood-fill with your wood pattern and then go to:

Smudge a little into the arm to get rid of the sharp difference.

8. Nails - Flood-fill with black.
9. Now we can go back to the Body layer. Click on the layer and get the Body selection again. Then, using the Smudge tool again, with the same settings, smudge up and down until you like the look of the fur.

13a. Click on the Outer Ears 1 layer and smudge the same way, except change the Size to 5.

If you wish, you can use the Eraser Tool, with any setting, to erase parts of the leaves that cover the branches, so it looks as though the leaf is behind the branch:
23. Now, if you wish, you can delete the Background layer.
