Lilies PSP Tutorial

This tutorial can be done PSP 7 or later. It provides practice in using the Smudge Tool and is fairly easy to complete.

All that you will need is the lilies file, which has the alpha selections.

The terms of use are here

If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here

There is a short tutorial for the Materials Pallette in PSP 8 here.

How to Get The Alpha Selections

Selections - Load/Save Selections - Load Selection from Alpha Channel
Click on the selection you want and then on Load

1. Flood-fill the Background layer with a colour like #7AF8E5, which makes it easier to see the edges of the flowers on later layers. When you're finished, you can delete the layer and put in a background of your choice.

Here is the Colour Chart for the tutorial:

Stems - Flood-fill with #748540.

Effects - Noise - Add

2. Right Leaves - Flood-fill with the same colour and add the Noise again. Add a Drop Shadow with these values:

3. Left Leaves - Flood-fill with #5A6B26.

7. Now, click on the Layers Pallette, and drag the Centre Petals layer above the Outside Red layer. (It's hard to work on the Outside Red layer without the Centre Petal layer showing.) Then go down and click on the Outside Red layer.

8. Outside Red - Flood-fill with #B33539.

Deselect (CTRL-D)
Effects - Noise - Add - 30% Uniform
Effects - Blur - Motion Blur

9. Now, click on the Retouch Tool/Smudge Brush Tool and set it to Smudge:

Using the Smudge Tool, pull out the colour so your image looks something like the image below. You can use the outline of the white petals as a guide. This is your unique picture, so it will be different--and that's good! Don't worry if you go past the white petals, we can clean that up later.

10. Adding some depth. If you use the Darken RGB feature of the Retouch Tool, you can add some interest to the red centres.

Just change the Smudge option to Darken RGB:

In PSP 8 and later, click on the Lighten/Darken Tool

Use the Darken tool to make a slightly darker line in the middle of the red part of the petals, something like this (I made it much too dark so it would show up):

11. Centre Red. Click on the Centre Red layer. Follow Steps 8, 9, and 10 again. Note that the smudges extend so they meet in the centre:

12. Cleaning stray colour. Now we can get rid of any of the red that goes beyond the flowers. Get the Outline selection (it is the last one)

Selections - Invert
Click on the Outside Red layer and press CTRL-X
Click on the Centre Red layer and press CTRL-X
And it's all cleaned up!

13. Centres - Flood-fill with #EFD485.

Selections - Modify - Contract - 2 Pixels
Flood-fill with #C47F20.
Deselect (CTRL-D)

Effects - Blur - Gaussian Blur - Radius 2

Adjust - Blur - Gaussian Blur - Radius 2

14. Filaments - Flood-fill with #ECCE97.

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V & H 2, Opacity 50, Blur 5, Colour Black

15. Anthers - Flood-fill with #733027. Then add the same Drop Shadow.

16. Congratulations! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.

If you wish, you can merge all the layers and add a Drop Shadow. You could also tube the individual flowers.
