Pansy Tutorial

PSP 7 and PSP 8

The terms of use are here

This tutorial was written with PSP 7, but directions for PSP 8 are given in red. You will need to be familiar with using the Colour and Layer Pallettes, which in PSP 8 is called the Materials Pallette. For this tutorial you will need:

pansy.zip (alpha channel selections)
OR pansy1.zip (selections)
the following colour chart, which you can download by right-clicking.

On the Colour Chart,

F=Foreground Colour
B=Background Colour
R=Rim Colour
C=Centre Colour

1. Open the pansyalpha.psp, and duplicate it if you think you might want to make other pansies. Close the pansyalpha file and click on the duplicate file, saving it as pansy.psp, or whatever.

(If you've downloaded pansy1.zip and will be using selections, open a new file 250 x 250. Get the needed selections by going to Selections - Load From Disk.)

2. Now, in the Colour Pallette, make the foreground colour the first dusky rose colour, and your background colour the second, dark, dusky colour. Click on the gradient icon , and choose the Foreground-Background gradient. Then click on the Radial Gradient, check Invert Gradient, and set Horizontal to 0 and Vertical to 100--as shown in the image below:

**********************************

In PSP 8, click on the foreground panel and a new menu will pop up. Click on the Gradient tab at the top. Choose the Foreground-Background gradient and then change the settings. The steps are shown below:

3. Go to

Selections - Load from Alpha Channel and get

Smudge in the direction of the gradient lines and only smudge in one direction--from the centre to the outside of the petal:

Keep smudging until you like the effect--keep selected!

NOTE: If you want to avoid changing the Colour Pallette and the Foreground back and forth, you may prefer to do all the petals and then go back and make the Rim layers.

5. Click on the next layer, Rim 1, change the style in the Colour Pallette from Gradient to Solid and flood-fill with the light pinkish Rim Colour in the Colour Chart or white. Go to

Selections - Modify - Contract 3 pixels
Hit CTRL-X
Go to Selections - Modify - Expand 3 pixels

Use the Smudge Tool with the same settings, except change the Size to 15. Smudge back and forth, until you like the look.

6. All the petal layers will be done the same way. All that will change is the gradient setting.

7. Click on the next layer, Upper Left Petal, and get the alpha selection, upperleftpetal.

In the Gradient Panel, change
Horizontal - 100, Vertical 100
Flood-fill and smudge (change Size back to 30)--keep selected.

8. Click on the Rim 2 layer and follow the same directions as for the Rim layer.

9. Click on the Left Petal layer, get the leftpetal selection,

Use the Gradient settings Horizontal 100, Vertical 42
Flood-fill and Smudge--keep selected.

10. Click on the Rim 3 layer and follow the directions for Rim 1.

11. Click on the Right Petal layer and get the rightpetal selection.

Use the Gradient settings Horizontal 0, Vertical 38
Flood-fill and Smudge--keep selected.

12. Click on the Rim 4 layer and follow the same procedures as before.

13. Click on the Bottom Petal layer and get bottompetal.

Use the Gradient settings Horizontal 50, Vertical 0
Flood-fill and Smudge--keep selected.

14. Click on the last Rim layer - Rim 5 and follow the same steps you've been doing.

15. Click on the Centre Purple layer, get centrecolour and flood-fill with #550032. Go to

Effects - Blur - Gaussian Blur - 5
Adjust - Blur - Gaussian Blur - 5

16. Click on the Lines layer and get the lines selection. Flood-fill with #3B0327.

17. Click on the Lines 1 layer, get lines1 and flood-fill with the same colour.

18.Click on the Centre layer, get the centre selection and flood-fill with the orange colour on the first row of the Coulour Chart.

19. Click on the White Pieces layer. Then click on the Paint Brush Tool and use the following settings:

Right Slash
Size 15, Hardness 100
Opacity 100, Step 25, Density 100
(In PSP 8, the settings are above the workspace)

Place the paint brush image over the orange centre like the image below, and click once, and then change the Right Slash to Left Slash and do the same:

Go to Effects - Blur - Gaussian Blur 2
Adjust - Blur - Gaussian Blur 2

You're all done! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Optional: If you want to make a pansy with a stem change your foreground colour to #2E682E, make a new layer, drag it under the first layer, and use the Draw Tool ,

Type Freehand, Width 8, Antialias checked

Click on the Pen Tool and use the same settings in the panel above the workspace like this:

and draw the stems. For the leaves, I used a tube which you can download here.
