Persian Style Rugs Tutorial

This tutorial was written with PSP 7. All you will need is the Free
Eye Candy 3.

The terms of use are here

NOTE: Each step which needs a new layer will use the format with the name of the new layer, and then the selection for that layer. So Whatever layer - whatever.sel, means make a new layer Whatever, and then get the whatever.sel file by going to Selections - Load from disk.
If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here

1. Open a new image, 400 x 400 pixels, calling it Background. Flood-fill with #CD9476. Go to

Effects - Plug-in Filters - Eye Candy - Swirl
Whirlpool Spacing 13
Smear Length 4
Twist 3
Streak Detail 10

Effects - Texture Effects - Texture - Asphalt.bmp preset
(Scroll through the pictures)

2. New layer - Oval. Right-click on the image below and save to your disk. Then open it in PSP, and flood-fill the layer with the pattern.

This pattern came from grsites

3. Click on the Selection Tool . Then place your cursor in the middle of the image (200 -200), and move the cursor up to about 48, and over to the right at about 319. Down in the lower corner, you will see numbers like this:

(80,354) - (319,48) = (xxx,yyy)0.128

After you've started moving the cursor, just watch the second set of numbers in brackets! Don't worry if you're a few pixels off. The main thing is to have a nice oval shape.

Go to Selections - Invert and hit DELETE. Then go to Selections - Invert, again, and the oval will be selected.

(If you want a rug like the one on the right, use the same Eye Candy Swirl settings that we used on the Background layer.) Keep selected.

4. Oval rim layer.Make this layer by clicking on clicking on the Background layer. Go to

Selections - Modify - Expand - 3 pixels
Flood-fill with #3C455C
Deselect (CTRL-D) and go to
Effects - Blur - Blur

5. Border layer. Make this layer anywhere. Select All (CTRL-A) and go to

Selections - Modify - Contract - 35 pixels
If that's too large,
just press CTRL-Z or click on the Undo curly arrow and try contracting 30

Flood-fill with the pattern

(Use the Eye Candy Swirl settings, if you wish.)

6. Now use your Magic Wand to click on the space in the centre. Keep selected. Make another layer, called Border 1, and flood-fill with #3C455C. Then go to

Selections - Modify - contract 3 pixels
Hit DELETE or CTRL-X
Deselect (CTRL-D) Go to Effects - Blur - Blur

7. This is the last step! Set your background colour to the blue and then go to

Image - Add Borders - 5 pixels

Congratulations! You're all done. I hope you like your carpet.
