Rolltop Desk Tutorial
This tutorial has directions for PSP 7 and PSP 8.
It is quite easy and all you'll need is the
rolltopalpha.zip file which has the Alpha Selections.
Directions for PSP 8, when different from PSP 7, are given in red type.
The terms of use are
here
If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here
There is a short tutorial for the Materials Pallette in PSP 8
here.
1. Open the rolltopalpha.psp file you downloaded. Click on the Kneehole Back layer. Then go to
Selections - Load from Alpha Channel - Kneehole Back
Selections - Load/Save Selections - Load selection from Alpha Channel - Kneehole Back
Flood-fill
with the Stained Wood pattern that comes with PSP, set at
Scale 50, Angle 90.
2. Click on the Kneehole Side layer and get the Kneehole Side Selection and flood-fill the same way.
3. Click on the Kneehole Shadow layer and get the Kneehole Shadow selection
Go to Selections - Invert
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V & H 20, Opacity 100, Blur 54, Colour black
4. Click on the Back Leg layer and get the Back Let selection. (I made a typo.)
Flood-fill with your wood pattern.
5. Roll Template layer--Roll Template Selection. Flood-fill with the Pine pattern (If you want the same colour for the rolls as the desk, flood-fill with the same Stained Wood pattern) Angle set to 0 and go to
Effects - 3D Selection - Inner Bevel
Use the Angled preset
6. Click on the Edging Left layer way above and get the Edging Left selection. Flood-fill and go to
Colours - Adjust - Brightness/Contrast
Adjust - Brightness and Contrast - Brightness/Contrast
Brightness minus 25, Contrast 0
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V 0, H 1, Opacity 100, Blur 3.
7. Click on the Edging Right layer and follow the same directions as for Edging Left, except use these settings for the Drop Shadow:
V 0, H minus 1, Opacity 50, Blur 3.
8. The Edging layers give you help with placing the rolls. Some of the rolls will go beyond the Edging layers, but that's o.k. We can take care of that!Go down and click on the Roll Template again.
Copy this roll (CTRL-C). Then click on the Rolls layer and paste a roll over the roll showing by pressing CTRL-E. Keep pressing CTRL-E and placing rolls in place until you reach the top of the two Edging layers. Then paste one roll under the first roll. (I know this seems nutty, but I made the first roll at the widest point, so all the rolls would fit horizontally.)
Some of the rolls stick out past the edgings. Staying on the Rolls layer, use the Eraser Tool

to erase the excess.
If you don't see the Eraser Tool
, click on the Background Eraser
and then click on the Eraser Tool.
These are the settings I used for the Eraser Tool
Shape Round
Size 15, Hardness 100
Opacity 100, Step 1, Density 100
Shape Round, Size 15, Hardness 100, Step 1, Density 100, Thickness 100, Rotation 0, Opacity 100.
9. Knob Roll layer - Knob Roll selection. Flood-fill with your wood pattern, Angle 0.
10. Lower Desk layer - Lower Desk selection. Flood-fill, Angle 90.
11. Lower Drawers layer - Lower Drawers selection. Flood-fill, Angle 0. Then go to
Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Angled Preset
12. Top layer - Top selection. Flood-fill with the wood pattern, Angle 0. Go to
Selections - Invert
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
H & V 0, Opacity 100, Blur 20
13. Right Side layer - Right Side selection. Flood-fill at Angle 90.
14. Front Legs layer - Front Legs selection. Flood-fill. Go to
Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Pillow Preset
Change--Width 1, Ambience 33
15. Lower Strip layer - Lower Strip selection. Flood-fill with Angle 0. Go to
Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Angled Preset
Same settings as Step 11.
16. Middle Front layer - Middle Front selection. Flood-fill with the same Angle.
17. Middle Drawers layer - Middle Drawers selection. Flood-fill with the same Angle and (I know it looks solid, but it isn't!) go to
Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Bead Preset
18. Top Rail layer - Top Rail selection. Flood-fill with same Angle.
19. Rail Edge layer - Rail Edge selection. Flood-fill with the same Angle and go to:
Colours - Adjust - Brightness/Contrast
Adjust - Brightness and Contrast - Brightness/Contrast
Brightness minus 45, Contrast 0
20. Rail Edge 1 layer - Rail Edge 1 selection. Flood-fill and darken as you just did.
21. Desk Top layer - Desk Top selection. Flood-fill and use the Inner Bevel Angle preset (to use the default value, click on the little box on the bottom right

).
22. Top Front layer - Top Front selection. Flood-fill.
23. Top Drawers layer - Top Drawers selection. Flood-fill with Angle 90. Use the Inner Bevel, Bead preset, changing the Width to 2.
24. Top Decos layer - Top Decos selection. Flood-fill with the same Angle, and use the Inner Bevel Frame preset, changing the Width to 9 and the Ambience to
minus 12.
25. Top Strip layer - Top Strip selection. Flood-fill with Angle 0, and use the Angled preset for the Inner Bevel.
26. For the knobs and keyholes, just open the Keyholes and Knobs layers by clicking on the red X's in the Layer Pallette. I had to do it this way because, LOL--PSP only allows you to place 14 selections in the Alpha Channels!
If you want to change the wood or the colour on the knobs, here's how:
Select All (CTRL-A)
Float (CTRL-F)
Defloat (SHIFT-CTRL-F)
Flood-fill
Use the Frame preset for the Inner Bevel (or any preset you like)
Width 9, Ambience minus 12, then go to
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V 1, H 1, Opacity 100, Blur 2.
Congratulations! I hope you like your rolltop desk.
