Dressing Screen with Fringe
This tutorial is written for PSP 7 and PSP 8. Instructions for PSP 8, when different from PSP 7, will be in red. This tutorial is quite easy. You will need to be familiar with the Colour/Materials pallette and that's about it.
If you're not familiar with the Materials pallette in PSP 8, there's a short tutorial
here.
You will need the
Alpha channels, the
corn image, if you don't have the corn tube, and, if you want them, the patterns shown--
patterns file.
The terms of use are
here
1. Open the screenalpha.psp file you downloaded. Click on the Hinges Centre layer in the Layer Pallette and then go to:
Selections - Load from Alpha Channel - Centre Hinges
Selections - Load/Save Selection - Load Selection from Alpha Channel - Centre Hinges
Flood-fill with white and then go to:
Effects - Texture Effects - Sculpture
Use the copper or the gold preset
(You'll find the presets listed at the top of the pop-up box.)
Turn off this layer by clicking on the eyeglasses for that layer in the Layer Pallette
(Click on the eye in PSP 8). We'll be merging layers later, but don't want these hinges merged until later.
2. Click on the Hinges layer and get the Hinges selection from the Alpha Channel and follow the same steps as in Step 1.
3. Click on the Panel 1 layer and get the Panel 1 selection from the Alpha Channels.
Flood-fill
with your pattern or a colour you like.
4. Click on Panel 1 layer and get the Panel 1 Trim from the Alpha Channel. Flood-fill with the colour that goes with your pattern (for the gold pattern I used #D1C879, and for the gold pattern I used #A193A2). Then go to:
Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V 1, H 1, Opacity 50, Blur 3, Colour Black
(With different patterns or colours, you may need to change the Opacity.
5.Click on the Panel Frame layer and get the Panel 1 selection again. Flood-fill with the colour you used for the Panel Trim. Then go to:
Selections - Modify - Contract - 4 pixels
Hit CTRL-X to delete the centre
Deselect (CTRL-D)
You can go to the next step, or add the following Inner Bevel:
Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Frame preset
6. Click on Panel 2 layer, and get Panel 2 selection, flood-fill with your colour or pattern.
7. Click on Panel 2 trim layer and get Panel 2 Trim, flood-fill and add the same Drop Shadow as before.
8. Click on the Panel 2 Frame layer and get the Panel 2 selection from the Alpha Channels again. Flood-fill, contract by 4 pixels and if you used the Inner Bevel, deselect (CTRL-D) and apply it again.
9. Save your image (CTRL-S).
10.
Making the Fringe
(If you don't have the corn tube, or just want to use the corn.psp image, go to Step 11.)
Open a new image, 200 x 200 pixels.
Click on the Picture Tube tool
, and set the Scale to 10 (just slide the slider all the way down.)
In PSP 8, place the corn tube in the Tube folder of PSP 8. You should find it under
Program Files/Jasc Software Inc/Paint Shop Pro 8/Picture Tubes
Then click on the Picture Tube tool

. On the Tool ribbon on top, change the Scale to 10, and then find the corn tube by clicking on the picture and using the slider to find the tube.
11. Click on your image and an image of the corn will appear. Then:
Press CTRL-A, CTRL-F, SHIFT-CTRL-F
(or go to Selections - Select All, then Selections - Float, then Selections - Defloat)
Flood-fill with the colour of your Panel Trim--you will have to click a few times to completely fill the corn with your colour.
It is rather long and straggly looking, so use the Selection Tool

to get rid of the excess.
If you don't see the Selection Tool, click on the Lasso Tool
or the Magic Wand
and a box will pop up, showing the Selection Tool.
Click on the Selection Tool and select Rectangle, Feather 0, Antialias checked. (The settings are on the Tool Ribbon under Selection Type, etc.) Here's where to draw your rectangle (approximately):
Hit CTRL-X and the part in the rectangle will disappear.
Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
V 0, H 1, Opacity 100, Blur 1, Colour Black.
12. Copy the image, (CTRL-C). Then go back to your original image. Click on the Panel 1 Fringe layer in the Layer Pallette. Then paste the image over the first panel by pressing CTRL-E. The fringe is wider than the panel, so use the Deformation Tool

to resize by pushing in the middle nodes:
Double-click on your image to get rid of the Deformation Too.
Click on another Tool to get rid of it.
It still doesn't look right, so go to:
Image - Rotate - Right - 3 degrees
Image - Rotate - Free Rotate - Right - 3 degrees
Make sure All layers is NOT checked
13. Click on the Panel 2 Fringe layer, and paste the image again (CTRL-E). Use the Deformation Tool again and then Rotate, using the same settings, only this time check Left instead of Right.
14. Merge all layers Visible by right-clicking on any of the layers in the Layer Pallette and choosing Merge - Merge Visible.
15. Open the Centre Hinges layer at the bottom of the Layer Pallette by clicking on the layer.
16. Now click on the merged layer. Go to
Layers - Duplicate, then
Image - Mirror
Use the Mover Tool
, if necessary, to put these duplicated panels in place.
17. Merge all layers visible, and you're done!
