Secretary Desk Tutorial

The terms of use are here

This tutorial was written with PSP 7, but should work with most previous versions.

You will need also need Super Blade Pro, the bevel_soft preset for Super Blade Pro, the free version of Eye Candy, and secretary.zip with selections and images.

You will need to be familiar with using layers and the flood fill tool , otherwise the tutorial is quite easy to do.

The wood pattern used is the Stained Wood pattern that comes with PSP, with the Angle set to 90o.

Open a new file, 250 x 530 pixels.

1. Name the first layer Feet, and go to:

Selections - Load from Disk

and choose 01feet.sel. Flood-fill with the wood pattern, or any pattern or colour you like (Angle 0). If you're not familiar with flood-filling with a pattern, you can go here for a look.

Go to:
Effects - Plug-in Filtres - Eye Candy - Inner Bevel,

and use the following settings:

2. Make another layer, Bottom Front, and get 02bottomfront.sel. Flood fill with the wood grain vertical. {Angle - 90) Remember to change the angle when you want the grain vertical or horizontal.

3. Make another layer, Lowest Ridge, and get 03lowestridge.sel. Flood fill (woodgrain horizontal) and use the Super Blade Pro bevelplain.

4. Next layer - Top Drawer. Get 04topdrawer.sel, flood fill, and go to Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel, with the following settings:

5. Duplicate the Top Drawer layer by going to Layers - Duplicate. Rename the layer, Middle Drawer by right-clicking on the layer, and use the Mover Tool to put the drawer in place.

6. Duplicate this layer, renaming the new layer Bottom Drawer, and put the bottom drawer in place. It's a good idea to keep the drawer layers separate, because you might want to change the spacing later.

7. Next layer - 05topback.sel. Flood fill.

The Drop Leaf
8. Make a new layer, Drop Leaf, and get 06dropleaf.sel. Flood fill and then get the file, 07dropleafsides.sel, fill and darken by going to

Colors - Adjust - Brightness/Contrast minus20

This looks a little strange now, but we will go back to this layer and use the deformation tool to give it some perspective and to fit with the top of the desk.

9. New layer - Middle Shelf - 08middleshelf.sel. Flood fill and apply the Blade Pro bevelplain as before. Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow--V 0, H 1, Opacity 80, Blur 6.

10. Lower Shelf layer - 09lowershelf.sel. Flood fill and apply the bevelplain preset again. Now you can apply the Drop Shadow, this time changing the Vertical to 3 and the Horizontal to 0.

11. Upper Shelf layer - 10uppershelf.sel. Flood fill, apply the bevelplain preset, and the same Drop Shadow.

12. Center Ridge - 11centerridge.sel. Flood fill and darken by going to Colors - Adjust - Brightness/Contrast - minus30.

13. Window Strip - 11windowstrip.sel. Flood fill, apply the bevelplain, and make a Drop Shadow with the following settings:

Vertical 0, Horizontal 3, Opacity 62, Blur 6

Duplicate this layer (Layers - Duplicate) and we'll move the strip over after the right door is in place.

14. Left Door - 12leftdoor.sel. Flood fill and go to Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel, and use the following settings.

Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel
V 4, H 3, Opacity 63, Blur 3, Colour black

To remove the shadow on the outsie of the door, use the magic wand to select the outside shadow, and press CTRL-X to remove it.

15. Click on Layers - Duplicate. Rename this layer Right door, and use the mover tool to move the door in place.

16. Now you can go back to the duplicate of the window strip layer and use the mover tool to move the strip in the center of the right door window.

17. Make the next layer above the Right Door layer -- Ridge Above Door layer - 13ridgeabovedoor.sel. Flood fill and add use the Blade Pro bevel plain. (LOL these layer names are awful, but the best I could come up with.)

18. Flat Piece Above Door layer - 14flatpieceabovedoor.sel. Flood fill.

19. Second Ridge above Doors layer - 15secondridgeabovedoors.sel. Flood fill and use the same Blade Pro bevel.

20. Second flat piece above Doors - 16secondflatpieceabovedoors.sel. Once again, just flood fill.

21. Highest ridge - 17highestridge.sel. For the last time, flood fill and apply the Blade Pro preset!

22. Now, let's go back to the dropleaf layer. Click on the deformation tool and then, keeping the CTRL key down, put your cursor on one of the top corner nodes, and push in until they are aligned with the top part of the desk. Double-click on the image to get rid of the nodes.

To select the dropleaf, press CTRL-A, and then, using the magic wand, click on the drop leaf. Marching ants should now be around the drop leaf, and we can apply the following the same inner bevel as last time.

23. Make the next layer, Sliders, above the Highest Ridge layer (these are the wood pieces that slide out to support the dropleaf when it is used as a desk). Get 18sliders.sel, and flood fill with black. Then go to Selections - Modify - contract 1 pixel. Press Ctrl-X and flood fill with the wood pattern. (You'll probably have to use the magnifier/zoom tool to see what you're doing!)

Decorations
All that's left is to open the *.psp files for the drawer pulls, the keyhole, and the decoration behind the dropleaf keyhole. Make a new layer, name it Keyhole, or whatever you're going to move. Then open the file you want to copy, press CTRL-A, CTRL-C, and then go to your Secretary image, press CTRL-E, and place the item where you want to. (It's a good idea to place the drawer pulls on separate layers, as you may want to move them when you're placed them all.)

You're all done! Congratulations, and I hope you enjoyed making the Secretary Desk.
