Spinning Wheel Tutorial

This tutorial was written with PSP 7. All you'll need is spinningwheel.zip, which has the wood fill and selections.

The terms of use are here

NOTE: Each step which needs a new layer will use the format with the name of the new layer, and then the selection for that layer. So Whatever layer - whatever.sel, means make a new layer Whatever, and then get the whatever.sel file by going to Selections - Load from disk.
If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here

1. Open a new image, 450 x 420 pixels. Call this layer Spokes. Get 01spokes.sel and flood-fill with the wood pattern (or any pattern you prefer). Go to

Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Frame preset.

2. Wheel layer - 02wheel.sel. Flood-fill and go to

Selections - Modify - Contract - 6 pixels
Deselect (CTRL-D)
Apply the Inner Bevel.

3. Link layer - 03link.sel. Flood-fill and apply the bevel.

4. Ring layer - 04ring.sel. (Use the Zoom Tool .) Flood-fill with white and go to

Effects - Texture Effects - Sculpture - Copper preset.

5. Foot Pedal layer - 05footpedal.sel. Flood-fill with the wood pattern.

6. Leg 1 layer - 06leg1.sel. Flood-fill, apply the bevel, and then go to Effects - Sharpen - Sharpen.

7. Crosspiece layer - 07crosspiece.sel. Flood-fill and apply the bevel.

8. Back leg layer - 08backleg.sel. Flood-fill, apply the bevel, and then go to Effects - Sharpen - Sharpen.

9. Leg 2 layer - 09leg2.sel. Flood-fill, apply the bevel, and Sharpen.

10. Bobbin support layer - 10bobbinsupport.sel. Flood-rill, apply the bevel again, and Sharpen.

11. Holder layer - 11holder.sel. Flood-fill and apply the bevel.

12. Table layer - 12table.sel. Flood-fill.

13. Top Piece layer - 13toppiece.sel. Flood-fill.

14. Strap layer. Turn off the background colour in the Colour Pallette and click on the Draw Tool , using the following settings:

Bezier Curve
Width 4
Antialias Checked (nothing else checked)

Don't worry--really doesn't matter what the curve looks like, as long as you have a curve!

Draw the line from the link piece to the centre of the wheel. If you draw from left to right, then you first click should be on the left side, and your second on the right. Here's how:

Now, let's darken the strap. Go to

Colors - Adjust - Brightness/Contrast
Brightness minus 60, Contrast 0.

15. Hub layer. With the Selection Tool , set to circle, Feather 0, antialias checked, make a circle in the middle of the wheel. Flood-fill and go to

Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Round preset
Change the Shininess to 10, and apply.

16. Handle layer - 14handle.sel. Flood-fill and apply the Inner Bevel, Pillow preset, changing the Ambience to 40.

17. Yarn layer - 15yarn.sel. Flood-fill with the colour of your choice.

18. Yarn 2 layer. Make the Yarn 2 layer, and then drag it to the bottom in the Layer Pallette. Now, using the Draw Tool ,

Type - Single Line, Width 2, Line Style #1 Solid,

Draw lines from the centre of the yarn ball to the wheel as show in the picture above. (Your foreground colour should still be on the colour you used for the ball of yarn.)

Congratulations! You're all done, and I hope you like your spinning wheel.
