Strawberry Design

This tutorial has directions for PSP 7 and PSP 8. The directions for PSP 8, when different from PSP 7, are given in red. The tutorial is quite long, but can be done in sections.

You will need the strawberry file with Alpha Channels and the strawberry flower file. The terms of use are here

If you aren't familiar with using the Colours Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here

There is a short tutorial for the Materials Pallette in PSP 8 here.

Strawberry Flower

WARNING: Because this tutorial is so long, it's a good idea to periodically empty the clipboard (Edit - Empty - Clipboard) and the Command History (Edit - Empty - Command History). If PSP starts acting weird, it's probably because they're taking up too much memory. AND, of course, don't forget to save (CTRL-S) often!

1. Open the strawberryfloweralpha.psp image you downloaded. Go to

Selections - Load from Alpha Channel - Petal
Selections - Load/Save Selection - Load Selection from Alpha Channel - Petal
Flood-fill with white

Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel
Width 4
Smoothness 56, Depth 4, Ambience minus 8, Shininess 0
Angle 315, Intensity 50, Elevation 30

2. Right-click on the layer in the Layer Pallette and click on Duplicate. Go to

Image - Rotate - Right 48o
Make sure All Layers is not checked Effects - Sharpen - Sharpen
Adjust - Sharpness - Sharpen

Use the Mover Tool to put into place--near the outer border
There should be a space in the centre like this:

3. Click on the Petal layer again and duplicate. (The reason for always duplicating the original layer is that you do not lose so much of the sharpness as when you duplicate from a duplicated layer.)

Image - Rotate - Right 135o
Make sure All Layers is not checked Effects - Sharpen - Sharpen
Adjust - Sharpness - Sharpen

4. Click on the Petal layer again and duplicate.

Image - Rotate - *Left* 135o
Make sure All Layers is not checked Effects - Sharpen - Sharpen
Adjust - Sharpness - Sharpen

5. Click on the Petal layer and duplicate for the last time.

Image - Rotate - *Left* 65o
Make sure All Layers is not checked Effects - Sharpen - Sharpen
Adjust - Sharpness - Sharpen

6. Click on the Petal layer and make a new layer, Centre. Set your foreground colour to white and click on the Paint Brush tool

In PSP 8, if you don't see the Paintbrush tool, click on the Airbrush tool or the Warp Brush and you will find it.

Use these settings:

Shape Round, Size 25, Hardness 100
Opacity 100, Step 100, Density 100
The settings for PSP 8 are in the Tool Ribbon over the workspace.

Click once in the middle of the petals. Then go to

Effects - Texture Effects Blinds
Width 3, Opacity 100, Colour #F8F861, Horizontal checked
Repeat with Horizontal unchecked

7. Make a new layer, Rods. Set your foreground to #DABA23, and turn off the background.

Click on the Draw Tool and use these settings:

Type: Single Line, Width: 2, Line Style #1 Solid, only Antialias checked.

Click on the Pen tool , then use these settings:

Draw several straight lines something like this:

8. Set your foreground colour to #FD8D43 and change the size for your Paint Brush tool to 6. Click once over each rod as in the image above.

9. Now merge all the layers by right-clicking on a layer in the Layer Pallette and choosing Merge - Merge Visible. Save as a *.psp image, or *.pspimage file.

All done--now on to the Strawberries!

Putting it All Together

Image - Resize - 75% (or whatever size you want) Make sure All Layers is not checked Use the Mover Tool to place the flower wherever you like.

2. Copy and Paste as many flowers as you want, putting each new flower on a new layer and resizing if you wish. You can back and forth on the layers to rearrange them any way you want.

3. If you wish, you can make some Squiggles on the Squiggle layer. Use your Draw Tool/Pen tool, Freehand, with a Width setting of 1. If you're going to use the same colour green, you might want to lighten so they'll show up against a dark background. You can make the squiggles any colour you like--they're only decoration!

Congratulations for finishing this tutorial. I hope you like your strawberries.
