Straw Bonnet Tutorial

This tutorial was written with PSP 7. You will need the bonnet.zip file, which contains the straw pattern and the ribbon pattern, and Redfield's free JAMA 3D plugin.

The terms of use are here

NOTE: Each step which needs a new layer will use the format with the name of the new layer, and then the selection for that layer. So Whatever layer - whatever.sel, means make a new layer Whatever, and then get the whatever.sel file by going to Selections - Load from disk.

If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here

1. Open a new image, 300 x 475 pixels. This is the Back Brim layer. Open the Cloth pattern and leave it open on your workspace. Get 01backbrim.sel, and flood-fill with the Cloth pattern, with the Angle set to 35o. Then go to:

Colors - Adjust - Brightness/Contrast
Brightness minus 60, Contrast 0.

2. Crown layer - 02crown.sel. Flood-fill with the cloth pattern.

3. Brim layer - 03brim.sel. Flood-fill. There, we've finished the basic bonnet. Now it's time to add the ribbon.

4. Making the Rosette

1. Open the ribbon image included in the download (or any pattern you prefer). Using the Selection Tool, , draw a small circle around a part of the pattern that you like, like this:

Copy the selection (CTRL-C). Then make a new image with this circle by pressing CTRL-V. In this new image, select the circle this way:

press CTRL-A
click on the circle with the Magic Wand
Keep selected!

2. Make a new layer, and flood-fill the circle with a nice colour for edging the rosette. then go to

Selections - Modify - Contract 2 pixels, and
Hit DELETE. Then go to
Selections - Modify - Expand 1 pixel--keep selected!

Right-click on one of the layers in the Layer Pallette, and
Merge - Merge Visible
Keep selected!

3. Make a new layer, Gradient, and flood-fill the circular selection with the Black-White gradient with these settings:

Now, go to Layers - Arrange - Send to bottom

Click on the merged layer with the circle on it, and on the right-hand side of the Layer Pallette, click on Normal. A menu will drop down. Click on Hard Light.

4. Lower the opacity of this top layer to 50, by using the slider on the right-hand side of the Layer Pallette.

5. Then Merge - Merge visible both layers. (I learned this technique from Mahogany--I hope her site is back up soon!) Copy the rosette (CTRL-C).

5. Rosette layer. Go back to your bonnet image, make a new layer, Rosette, and get 04rosette.sel. Paste your rosette into the selection by pressing SHIFT-CTRL-L. Then go to

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow
H & V 2, Opacity 100, Blur 3.

6. Ribbon Brim - Go to the Ribbon image and then

Image - Resize
Click on Pixel Size
Width 104, Height 51
Effects - Sharpen - Sharpen, twice.

This piece of ribbon is not long enough, so we'll have to fix that!

7. Still on the Ribbon image, go to

Layers - Promote to Layer
Click on Image - Canvas Size
Use the following settings:

8. Copy the ribbon (CTRL-C), and paste into place (CTRL-E), next to the first ribbon piece, carefully matching the pattern. Then press CTRL-E again, and match the third piece of ribbon to the other two. You should now have a nice long ribbon. Now, copy your long ribbon (CTRL-C). You can save this image if you think you will use this ribbon again.

9. Ribbon layer. Go back to your Bonnet image and paste (CTRL-E) the image anywhere on this new layer. Deselect (CTRL-D). Then go to

Image - Rotate - Right 50 o
Make sure All Layers is not checked.
Effects - Sharpen - Sharpen.

Now, use the Mover Tool to place the ribbon on the crown of the hat. Of course, it is much too long, so get 02crown.sel, got to Selections - Invert and hit DELETE. Go to

Layers - Arrange - Move down.

10. Ribbon Ties layer. Copy the long ribbon, again, deselect (CTRL-D), and Rotate the image to the right, 80 o. Then go to

Effects - 3D Effects - Wave

11. Now, click on the Deformation Tool . To pinch together the upper end of the ribbon, press the CTRL key, and with the cursor on one of the upper boxes, push in like this

Then go to Effects - Sharpen - Sharpen, and use the Mover Tool to place the tie under the rosette. Just one more step!

12. Go to

Layers - Duplicate
Image - Mirror
Use the Mover Tool to move the ribbon, and
go to Layers - Arrange - Send to Bottom,

and you're all done! I hope you like your bonnet.
