Red Tole Rose PSP Tutorial

This tutorial was done with PSP 8 and PSP 9. There are a lot of layers, so this is not a quick tutorial.

Because of the shading and brush work needed, the tutorial is suitable for intermediate to expert levels. However, beginners might enjoy trying it out.

All that you will need is the toleredrose file.

The terms of use are here

If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here

There is a short tutorial for the Materials Pallette in PSP 8 here.

How to Get The Alpha Selections

Selections - Load/Save Selections - Load Selection from Alpha Channel
Click on the selection you want and then on Load

There is a Template layer which has numbers for each petal and leaf. You may want to open this layer if you want to touch up one of the petals or leaves at the end of the tutorial. Just get the Template selection and Flood-fill with black.

1. These are the colours for the leaves and petals. Just right-click, download, and keep open on the desktop.

You could fill the leaves with the solid colour 6 (or 7) or you could use a Foreground-Background gradient with Colour 5 as the Foreground and Colour 7 as the Background. (If you don't know how to do this, there's a tutorial here). If you use the gradient, the Angle will have to be changed for the different leaves. The Angle is given in the tutorial. Below is an image showing the difference.

Leaves
All the leaves will be done the same way, except for the Small Leaves, which you just Flood-fill.

1. Small leaves - Flood-fill with a green colour or gradient.

2. Leaf 1 - Flood-fill with the colour or gradient you like. Then

Adjust - Add/Remove Noise - Add Noise - 12% Uniform

(Approximate Angles if you're using a gradient.

Leaf 1 - 180
Leaf 2 - 217
Leaf 3 - 318
Leaf 4 - 342
Leaf 5 - 13
Leaf 6 - 50
Leaf 7 - 90
Leaf 8 - 135)

3. Set the Foreground colour to #8. Click on the Paint Brush Tool with the settings below. (If you check the Wet Look box, the colour will be more subdued than if you don't check it. Use whichever look you like better.)

Keeping the leaf you're working on selected, so that the highlights don't go past the leaf, paint in highlights around the edges in whatever way you like, or you can use the image above as a guide. You might want to put in some curved highlights, too (see image below).

4. Make leaves 2- 8 the same way.

5. After you've finished colouring and highlighting each leaf, go to the Dark Lines layer.

Set your Foreground colour to #5, or black, get a leaf selection from the Alpha channel, and follow the curves on the leaves, using the Pen tool.

Do this for each of the leaves. (Make sure the Background colour is off before beginning to draw!) Below are a few examples:

Make all your dark markings on this layer.

6. After you've made these dark markings on the leaf, go to:

Adjust - Blur - Gaussian Blur - Radius 2.

You may want to lower the Opacity of this layer by using the slider.

Petals
1. Petal 1 - flood-fill with one of the red colours, #1, 2, or 3, or make a Foreground-Background gradient from No's 1 & 3. If you use the gradient, set the Angle so that the lighter colour is on the outside of the petal.

Flood-fill the petal with your colour or gradient.

2. Highlights - Keeping the petal selected, change the Foreground to #4, and click on the Paint Brush Tool, using the same settings as before. Highlight the outer edges of the petals. You can use the image above as a guide.

3. Follow Steps 1 & 2 for each petal.

4. On Petals 3, 7, and D (see Template layer), use the Lighten/Darken Tool to darken the inside of the petal. You might want to darken even more areas in your image.

You're all done! I hope you like your rose.
