First, you have to decide which rose you are going to make. The next two sections give directions for the fills for the various roses.
Directions for PSP 8, where it's different from PSP 7, are given in red.
If you are not familiar with using the Materials Pallette in PSP 8, there is a short explanation here
You can download the chart below by right-clicking and saving.
Fills for the Orange and Red Tole Rose
I could have just given you the fill, but this way you can see how they're made and make fills in any colours you like. These fills are rather garish, but we will be smudging them when we actually make the petals.
1. Open a new image, 100 x 100, and Flood-fill with the Colour 1 (#E53A30). Then go to
Effects - Noise - 45%
PSP 8 - Adjust - Add/Remove Noise - 45% Random
Effects - Blur - Motion Blur, Angle 0, Intensity 13 pixels
Adjust - Blur - Motion Blur, Angle 0, Intensity 13 pixels.
That's it! Easy, wasn't it? Open another image, 100 x 100, Flood-filling with the yellow colour, #2 (#FFCC3A) on the chart and repeat Step 1.
Save your fills and leave them open on the desktop. Then skip to Step 2.
Fill for the Pale Pink Rose
This is easy. Just place the rosepetalsjub.jgd file in the Gradient folder of PSP, and go to Step 2. (The gradient folder is usually found at
Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\PSP 7 (or 8)\Gradients.)
Fill for the Deep Pink Rose
Set your Foreground Colour to Colour 6 (#FBE0F0) and your Background Colour to Colour 7 (#C64578). Then, in the Colours or Materials Pallette, use the Foreground-Background gradient. Now go to Step 2.
Fill for the Icon/Country Rose
Just set your foreground to the first colour in the chart, and your background to the second colour and continue.
All Roses
1. Rose Outline layer - click on this layer and go to
Selections - Load from Alpha Channel - 03middlerightpetal
Selections - Load/Save Selection - Load Selection from Alpha Channel - roseoutline
When Smudging, it is very easy to end up with areas where there is no colour. By making this layer and filling it, most of these areas won't show when you're done. Flood-fill the layer with the gradient/colour you will be using for your petals.
2. Open the rosealpha.psp file you downloaded by clicking on it. If you think you'll make more that one rose, duplicate the file by pressing SHIFT-D and close the original file.
Click on the Middle Right Petal layer and go to
Selections - Load from Alpha Channel - 03middlerightpetal
Selections - Load/Save Selection - Load Selection from Alpha Channel - 03middlerightpetal
Tole Rose - Flood-fill with the yellow fill you made, Scale 100, Angle 290.
Deep Pink Rose - Flood-fill with the rosepetalsjub gradient, Scale 100, Angle 328, Invert Gradient Box checked. Keep selected!
Pale Pink Rose - Flood-fill with the Foreground-Background gradient, Scale 100, Angle 328. Keep selected!
Icon/Country Rose - Flood-fill with Colour 2 in the chart and go to
Selections - Modify - Contract 2
Flood-fill with Colour 1
If you like the effect, go to
Effects - Noise - Add 12% Uniform
Adjust - Add/Remove Noise - 12% Uniform
Keep selected!
Now it's time for Smudging [not the Icon rose :-)]
NOTE that you always need to keep your selection selected when you smudge, or you will end up with a mess outside the selection. If you have not kept it by mistake, just get the selection again from the Alpha Channel.
In PSP 7, click on the Retouch Tool

and Click on the second tab (looks like two stars) and choose Smudge. Then go back to the first tab and use these settings:
Shape - Round, Size 30, Hardness 5
Opacity 30, Step 20, Density 100.
Once you're made these settings, they will stay the same.
PSP 8--Click on whichever of these tools is showing:
and then choose Smudge
Use the setting above, filling in the settings in the Tool Ribbon over your workspace.
Smudge, more or less, in the direction of your fill. The smudging makes each rose you make unique, so I'm just showing you my guidelines, but feel free to smudge as you like!
