Beaded Victorian Purse Tutorial

This tutorial was written with PSP 7. You will need:
whbeadedpurse.zip, which contains the SBP preset. Place the *.q5q and *.bmp files in the environments and textures file in Super Blade Pro.

(The preset includes a *.bmp file made by amr--if anyone knows who this is, I would like to give them credit.)

The terms of use are here

NOTE: Each step which needs a new layer will use the format with the name of the new layer, and then the selection for that layer. So Whatever layer - whatever.sel, means make a new layer Whatever, and then get the whatever.sel file by going to Selections - Load from disk.
If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here

1. Open a new image, 250 x 400 pixels. Flood-fill with black or dark blue, so you can see what you're doing on the upper layers. Put the glassswirl.q5q preset in the Environments and Textures folder in Super Blade Pro.

2. Make the following layers, which we'll come back to later

3. Purse layer - purse.sel. Flood-fill the selection with light gray (#C0C0C0) and go to

Effects - Plug-in Filters - Flaming Pear - Super Blade Pro
glassswirljub preset

4. Frame layer - frame.sel. Flood-fill with white, and then use the SBP preset silver. It is quite dark, so go to

Colors - Adjust - Brightness/Contrast
Brightness 80, Contrast 0.

5. Stems layer. We'll come back to this layer after we make the knobs.

6. Knobs layer. With the Selection Tool , Feather 0, Antialias checked, draw a small circle just above the frame. Flood-fill with white, and then apply the SBP silver and Brighten 80.

TIP: If you have trouble making such a small circle, don't sweat it. Just make the smallest circle you can, flood-fill it with white and then re-size by going to Image - Resize--making sure Resize All Layers is not checked.
Copy this first knob (CTRL-C) and paste (CTRL-E) the second knob just a wee bit over the first knob:

Of course, your knobs will be much smaller!

7. Click on the Stems layer. With your foreground colour set to white, click on the Draw Tool and use these settings:

Single line, Width 4, Line Style #1, only Antialias checked.

Draw two lines from the knobs to the frame, almost meeting at the bottom. If you wish, you can apply the silver preset from SBP (I didn't). If the stems are too long, just go to the Layer Pallette and drag this layer below the Purse layer.

8. Tassel Top layer. At the bottom of the purse, draw a circle with the Selection Tool, and flood-fill with the light gray and apply the glassswirl preset.

9. Tassels. With your foreground colour still set to gray, and a width of about 10, draw some tassels, and then apply the preset again.

10. Upper Frame layer. Click on the Upper Frame layer and get upperframe.sel. Flood-fill with white, apply the SBP silver preset, and Brighten by 80, as you did before.

11. Handle layer. Click on the layer. With your foreground colour set to the light gray, and the same settings for the Draw Tool, except changing the Width to 20, draw the handle at an angle, as in the image above. Click on the handle with the Magic Wand, and then apply the SBP glassswirl preset again.

12. Top Ring layer. Click on this layer. Changing your foreground colour to white, draw a small circle over the handle and the upper frame. Then go to

Selections - Modify - Contract - 3 pixels
Hit DELETE
Click on the ring with the Magic Wand
Apply the silver SBP preset
Brighten by 80

Now, enlarge your image with the Zoom tool . Click on the Eraser Tool , with the size set to 3, and erase the front part of the ring:

Congratulations! You're all finished! I hope you like your fancy purse.
