Windsor Chair Tutorial

This tutorial was written with PSP 7. All you'll need is the Windsor Chair file.

If anyone knows where that beautiful cat is from, please let me know, so I can give credit.

The terms of use are here>

NOTE: Each step which needs a new layer will use the format with the name of the new layer, and then the selection for that layer. So Whatever layer - whatever.sel, means make a new layer Whatever, and then get the whatever.sel file by going to Selections - Load from disk.

If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns, there is a short explanation here

1. Open a new image, 250 x 400 pixels. This is the Leg 1 layer. Get 02leg1.sel, flood-fill with the wood pattern of your choice (I used the Finished Wood pattern in PSP, with the Scale 45, and Angle 90o. Then go to

Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel - Preset Frame,
Change the Width to 3.

2. Leg 2 layer - 02leg2.sel. Flood-fill and apply the same Inner Bevel.

3. Crossbrace layer - 03crossbrace.sel. Food-fill and apply the Inner Bevel. Then go to

Colors - Adjust - Brightness/Contrast
Brightness minus 20, Contrast 0.
4. Leg 3 layer - 04leg3.sel. Flood-fill and apply the Inner Bevel.

5. Leg 4 layer - 05leg4.sel. Flood-fill and apply the Inner Bevel.

6. Underseat layer - 06underseat.sel. Flood-fill and darken by minus 20, as we did for the Crossbrace layer.

7. Seat layer - 07seat.sel. If you're using the Finished Wood pattern, change the Angle to 9 o, and flood-fill. Keep selected!

8. Cutout 1 layer. Make a new layer, and go to

Selections - Adjust - Contract 10pixels, then go to
Effects - 3D Effects - Cutout
V & H 10, Opacity 59, Blur 27
Make another layer, Cutout 2
Apply the Cutout again, changing the V & H to minus 10.

9. Turn off all the layers below the Cutout layers by clicking on the glasses in the Layer Pallette. Then right-click on one of the Cutout layers, and Merge Visible. Lower the opacity of this merged layer to around 55. Then turn on the other layers by clicking on the glasses again. Finally, click on the merged Cutout layer and then

Click on the Retouch Tool and use these settings:

Then Click on the Smudge Options tab, and choose Soften from that menu. With the Smudge Tool, go around the outside edges of the Cutout to Soften it.

10. Lower Rungs layer - 08lowerrungs.sel. Flood-fill, changing the Angle to 90 o, apply the Inner Bevel, and darken as before.

11. Arm Supports layer - 09armsupports.sel. Flood-fill and apply the Inner Bevel.

12. Underarch layer - 10underarch.sel. Flood-fill with black.

13. Lower Arch layer - 11lowerarch.sel. Flood-fill.

14. Upper Arch layer - 12upperarch.sel. Flood-fill, apply the Inner Bevel, and darken.

15. Upper Rungs layer - 13upperrungs.sel. Flood-fill, apply the Inner Bevel, and darken.

Congratulations! You're all done. I hope you like your chair.
