Log Holder Tutorial

This tutorial was written with PSP 7, but should work with earlier versions. You'll need the woodbin.zip and a dingbat font with a decoration you like. I used the Fleurons font, which you can get here.

The terms of use are here

NOTE: Each step which needs a new layer will use the format with the name of the new layer, and then the selection for that layer. So Whatever layer - whatever.sel, means make a new layer Whatever, and then get the whatever.sel file by going to Selections - Load from disk.

If you aren't familiar with using the Colour Pallette for patterns,
there is a short explanation here

1. Open a new image, 375 x 300 pixels. This first layer is the Post layer. Get 01post.sel and Flood-fill with black for the brassy bin or #404040 or black for the iron bin.

2. Now's the time to make the gradient.

Wrought Iron Bin - Set your foreground colour to #404145 and your background colour to #67676F.
Brassy Bin - foreground colour - #D49363, background colour - #E5C0A5

After setting your colours, click on the gradient symbol in the Colour Pallette, and slide all the way up the image menu that opens, to #1 Foreground-Background and click on that image. Use the following settings:

3. Right Side layer - 02rightside.sel. Flood-fill with the gradient you've made.

4. Back layer - 03back.sel. Flood-fill with the gradient.

5. Wood layer. This is where you can place your wood after you've made the Front and Left Side layers. You can use the wood image included in the download, or any wood tube you have.

6. Front layer - 04front.sel. Flood-fill with the gradient.

7. Left Side layer - 05leftside.sel. Flood-fill with the gradient.

8. Braces layer - 06braces.sel. Flood-fill with black or dark gray.

9. Edging layer - 07edging.sel. Flood-fill the brassy bin with #CB7F47 and the iron bin with black or dark gray.

10. Decoration layer. Unzip the Fleurons font. You don't have to install it, just leave it open on your desktop.

I used the font, Fleurons, Capital E. With the Text Tool make your letter white, size 48. When you choose the presets you're going to use, pick them from the upper written menu, not from the images. Go to

Effects - Texture Effects - Sculpture
Brassy Bin - Use the Copper preset, changing Ambience to 50
Repeat

Iron Bin - Use the Silver preset, changing Ambience to minus 50
Repeat

11. Deselect (CTRL-D). Then go to

Image - Rotate - Left - 5 degrees
(Make sure All layers is not checked)
Use the Mover Tool to place the decoration.

12. Circles. Using the Selection Tool , Antialias checked, draw a small circle on top of one of the posts. Flood-fill with either dark gray, black, or #CB7F47, and then apply the Inner Bevel, Round preset.

Then copy the circle (CTRL-C) and paste the other knob (CTRL-E).

You're all done. Congratulations! I hope you're pleased.
